The Startup Story

The Startup Story

Act I — The Garage

The lore of startups is embedded in our culture. The napkin the idea was written on. The garage where the product was built. The founders that saw the future.

In these early days performance wasn’t tracked because everyone gladly worked into the night, huddled over cold pizza and bad coffee. Culture wasn’t codified in handbooks because it was lived. One-on-ones weren’t scheduled because everyone knew what was going on.

For some startups the story ends here. They run out of money, they run out of energy, or they run out of time. For others, this is the beginning of the next act…

Act 2 — The Office

For the lucky ones the business model actually works. Customers are excited. Headcount grows. Everything is working…well, almost everything.

Every new hire adds more capability, but every new hire also adds stress to the system. The five to ten original people become a few hundred people, and the leadership doesn’t have their finger on the pulse anymore.

Conflicting visions arise, politics start to emerge, factions begin to form. This is all normal, but it doesn’t mean it’s good.

Executives start to feel the pressure because they know something is off. There are bright spots, but there are also shadows. Teams are misaligned, and the culture feels…broken.

No one will say it out loud, but the work isn’t as fun—or productive—as it used to be.

Act 3 — The Decision

Most companies persist in this zombie state. Payroll is being made, and everyone has plenty of personal-time-off to recover from the grind. They tell themselves that this is what real, grownup-business look like.

Other companies, the outliers, expect more from each other. They understand that work matters and they want it to mean something. They demand high performance and an extraordinary culture.

That’s why we built Workplace.
